The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has launched a province-wide initiative to identify and assess unsafe school buildings. The move comes in the wake of a recent tragedy in Peshawar, where a private school roof collapse claimed the lives of at least 30 children and a female teacher, leaving more than 50 others injured.
Dr. Aamir Abdullah, a member of the K-P Advisory Council for Education, confirmed that the Education Department has started receiving initial reports regarding potentially hazardous structures. He emphasized that the process aims to ensure necessary safety measures are implemented to protect students, teachers, and staff from future accidents.
The identification process has been heavily supported by information and videos shared by citizens on social media. Dr. Abdullah praised the public for fulfilling a social responsibility by highlighting dangerous conditions, noting that this cooperation allows authorities to take timely preventive actions. He also commended the Elementary and Secondary Education Department for its prompt response, with teams working through holidays to examine reports without delay.
Authorities have urged the public to continue reporting potentially dangerous educational facilities. The collective effort is expected to help the provincial government determine which buildings require urgent inspections or structural improvements to provide a safe learning environment.
