PM calls for faster housing-loan payouts as approvals reach Rs426bn

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has asked banks to speed up the release of housing finance after a review showed that approvals under the Apna Ghar programme were substantially ahead of actual disbursements. APP reported the meeting in Islamabad on 9 October.

Officials told the prime minister that loans worth Rs426 billion had been approved, while Rs76 billion had been paid out. These figures describe different stages of financing: an approved loan is not the same as money already delivered to a borrower.

The programme aims to provide Rs700 billion in financing for the construction or provision of 125,000 housing units. Sharif called for timely funding and measures to reduce the gap between approval and payment. The meeting also reviewed preparations for developer financing, with consultations on the framework still underway.
